Tap has to be one of the most enjoyable and rhythmic dance styles. Where else can children have fun making so much noise! Its roots are set in America and now the syllabus of the ISTD reflects this very earthy and rhythmic style, of tap which has had an influence on British theatre.
The exam syllabus starts at primary through to grade 6 for the children's grades, with Intermediate, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 for students interested in professional training or those who wish to enter our Teacher Training Program.
Students can start Tap when they are 3 years old in our Baby Tap or Baby Combo class and will start to learn some of the fundamentals of tap dancing, this is increased during the 30 minute pre-primary classes. The primary syllabus is covered when the student moves into the 45 minute exam class. From then on the student will progress through the grades in order. Tap classes take part in our shows and selected students can also take part in external ISTD tap awards. Students learn shuffles, pick-ups, paradiddles and other compound steps,as well as turning steps, time-steps and dances.
For the late starters we suggest you call us so we can find the right class for you, we may suggest a younger students class initially and then move you as soon as you know the basics into a class more suitable to your age.
Check out our timetable for the full range of classes available. Please phone or email to confirm that there are spaces available as there could be a waiting list running on specific classes which are currently full.
We are very pleased to offer classes for adults at various levels on Thursdays, one for beginners one for improver's / experienced. (please see our adult class information)
Because the tap syllabus is the same for girls and boys apart from style differences, there are no separate boys tap classes.
